Someone said on twitter that +Bill Clinton  "spoke to an empty chair too", he had everyone out of their chairs cheering and had the Democrats energized like +Michelle Obama had done the night before.  It was professorial, detailed, wonky and he let fly zinger after zinger.  And at the end he and +Barack Obama hugged.

The nomination speech by Bill Clinton on day two of the DNC topped Twitter, seeing the highest spike in tweets per minute.

Social Media Club Austin #SMCA August Panel was on "Is Social Media Replacing Traditional Journalism?", held at KLRU in the Historic Austin City Limits Soundstage. Original video by +Paul Walhus

The news of bin Laden's death broke first on Twitter. Mitt Romney officially announced his VP choice on a phone app. In fact, over 50% of people learn about breaking news over social media rather than official news sources, and 46% get their news online at least three times per week.

It's a new media world now, a digital information age with a 24/7 news cycle, citizen journalists and an ultra-connected, smartphone-toting public. But has social media helped or hurt traditional journalism? If content is king, where should the public look to find timely, credible news?

In this August panel, local media pros discussed the impact of social media, both positive and negative, on traditional journalism, including news organizations, editorial talent and a sometimes skeptical public. Panelists covered timely topics such as political reporting and Olympic coverage, as well as the role and reality of citizen journalists and mobile news consumption.  (from smca website)

Panelists were:

+Nathan Bernier Nathan Bernier, Senior Reporter at KUT 90.5 FM

+Maira Garcia Maira Garcia, Social Media Editor at the Austin-American Statesman

+Emily Ramshaw Emily Ramshaw, Editor at The Texas Tribune

+Cindy Royal Cindy Royal, Associate Professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, Texas State U

+Dara Quackenbush Dara Quackenbush, strategic communications consultant, will moderate the discussion.

The Sharing Economy Trust Throwdown
Featuring: Legit, TrustCloud, Shareable, Lenddo
In an economy driven by transactions between strangers, whom do we trust? Several startups have emerged to address this problem. While their approaches differ, all propose portable metrics to allow users to carry their reputations across multiple sharing platforms. This session pits advocates against skeptics in a debate on the best way forward.

The sharing economy is growing up and its leaders are ready to tackle the tough questions about their businesses on the tech world’s biggest stage. This week, the SXSW Interactive Festival revealed th…

Help Drones from California invade Texas #sxsw … idea for a panel that I'm going to vote for.   #robots   #sxsw   #sxsw2013    +Annika O'Brien

The three panels to vote for:

Who's Afraid Of The Big, Bad Drone?  This panel offers up a cost-benefit analysis of the domestic use of drones.  Panelists include me, Chris Anderson (Wired Magazine and DYI Drones), Erin Rapacki (Robot Launchpad), and Nabiha Syed (New York Times).

Drones.edu (link goes live next month).  This panel of interdisciplinary professors discusses how drones can be used in the classroom.  Panelists include me, Matt Waite (Drone Journalism Lab), Todd Humpreys (University of Texas, Austin), and Amie Stepanovich (EPIC).

Drones Gone Wild.  This panel highlights the potential danger of drones to domestic civil liberties, particularly privacy.  Panelists include me, Trevor Timm (EFF), Parker Higgins (EFF), and Nabiha Syed (New York Times).

Oh sure, Windows 8 does boot faster and it has a few new features, but generally speaking Windows 8 with its “not Metro” interface is junk. I've been working with Windows 8 in one version or another for months now and there is simply nothing about it that would make me recommend it over Windows 7 or XP for that matter.  By Steven J. For the past five years, the Blogger Lounge at SXSW has served as the hub for great minds and friends to celebrate innovation and collaboration. At SXSW 2012, the Samsung Blogger Lounge was hosted by TechSet’s Stephanie Agresta and Brian Solis (@techset) and I had some great interactions there.

From Sous Vide to Social Search, How Technology is Changing How We Cook and Eat
Addie Broyles, Food writer and blogger, Austin American-Statesman, Statesman.com, Austin360.com

+Addie Broyles is the food writer for the Austin American-Statesman, where she writes a weekly column and blog called Relish Austin and contributes to the newspaper’s monthly magazine, Real. When she’s not chasing after her two young sons or tweeting about her latest kitchen successes (or failures), the Ozarks native and University of Missouri graduate writes about women and food at TheFeministKitchen.com and is the advisory council chair of the Austin Food Blogger Alliance.

In 2011, Addie was named by Tribeza magazine as one of the top 10 Austinites to watch and was voted the top food writer in the city by the Austin Chronicle. She recently won the National Headliner Award for special or feature column on one subject by an individual and has been a judge for the James Beard Foundation’s media and journalism awards.

Addie Broyles, Food writer and blogger, Austin American-Statesman, Statesman.com, Austin360.com

The Internet and social media revolution have turned the process of picking restaurants and finding new recipes on its head. Food bloggers aren’t the only people who snap pictures of their food when they go out to eat, and they certainly aren’t the only ones connecting with their peers online and off to talk about what we eat and why.

Great talk +Addie Broyles

Here's one answer to the question I posed about the twitter/NBC partnership on the https://twitter.com/hashtag/olympics page and one reason why the #NBCfail  hashtag has gained so much traction.

If a gymnast flubs spectacularly on a routine but sticks the landing, which makes a more lasting impression on the audience: the mistakes or the graceful finish?

Twitter and NBC formed a partnership for the Olympics, as the microblogging site hopes to use the Games as a way to build its following and prove itself as a money-making, sustainable business.  So did they succeed?

Facebooks 2011 ad revenue of $3 billion plus was ten times that of Twitters revenue.  The Olympics are twitters hail mary pass to catch up with the Facebook ad behemoth.

Austin, TX – Spring.net – SXSW Special – To quote Sara Toole: Another great session at SXSW was given by Jonah Sachs, author of the upcoming book Winning the Story Wars: Why Those Who Tell (and Live) the Best Stories Will Rule the Future. This was a fascinating presentation about one of the secrets to creating videos and stories that people will like and want to share.

Jonah says that the elements that make stories 'viral' are universal, and have been around for ages. He identifies three specific elements — freaks, cheats and familiars — as being common elements of stories that become mythic.

Freaks are characters that do not quite fit in. The elephant God 'Ganesh' is an example Jonah uses of a freak. People like to cheer for the freaks, the underdogs who overcome adversity to achieve something great. A freak could be an underdog with a big challenge.

I bought this Airstream in Lane City, Texas yesterday for $2,000 from Briana (the expecting lady in the picture).  Ken the plumber towed it to the Cedar Creek Lodge with his big muscle truck and we set it up in a nice spot in the woods.  I'm going to list if for rent on Craigslist today.  It's in great condition, everything works and it was a great price.  You have to travel far afield from food trailer hungry Austin to get a good deal on an Airstream these days.  And you have to make your move fast.

I had a dream the other night about having an event in Austin. It was at Cambridge Tower, a 15 story building at the edge of campus, the Capitol and downtown.

I dreamed we had a "oops" party with all the past winners of the Austin Statesman Social Media Awards. It started out at the AT&T Center with a SXSW style panel and presentation, then we had a BBQ party by the pool. The media rockstar soiree culminated in a rooftop star gazing party on the 16th floor of the Cambridge Tower.

Here's the relevant link to the Texas Social Media Awards:
http://www.statesman.com/marketing/2012-statesman-social-media-awards-2045908.html

Why is it called "oops" you say? Not for Rick Perry (although I did dream that he showed up as a guest) but for "order of the plastic star". Winners of the Statesman Social Media Awards all get little plastic star trophies every year.

I think there have been 75 past winners of the "oops" award and there will be 25 more this year. My fellow condo dweller +Kerry Olsen was the big prize winner last year as Texas top social media person.

(to be continued, may now this event will happen in real life. There's been a development . . . )

The company I've been promoting (Roboreel.com) via social media campaigns hit a little bit of paydirt today by being featured in Gizmodo. And I heard about the Gizmodo article by word of mouth in a hangout from +Richard Wooding. I'm pretty pleased about this development!

Just got back from making a video at the Bob Bullock Texas History museum where Robert Rodriguez gave a talk and engaged a young hispanic woman film maker about his commitment to this films. Nothing stops this guy, he moves ahead on projects regardless of the barriers or lack of funds. Can't wait to push it out there. It was inspiring to me as a videographer.

This video is the tail end of the +Vic Gundotra and +Guy Kawasaki fireside chat at +SXSW and the chat off stage with Guy afterwards. http://www.viddler.com/v/30a65369 is the link.
Guy: Hangouts, why are you building them they must be expensive.
Vic: We looked at video conferencing. Why don’t families connect?
1. Expensive, ok, we make it free.
2. Complicated, using software and hardware, we made ours browser.
3rd is Social, what if someone rejects you? You won’t go to neighbor and knock on door to say “hi”. But 2 or 3 people on the porch and you feel compelled to walk up to them and say hi. In circles, if there’s 2-3 people, and people go to the hangout because there are people there, that stimulates usage of Hangout. We provide hangout free.
We want Google to empower passionate people to do amazing things.
Vic: Social annotation of an ad. If a friend of yours in the circle plus one’s an ad, like a charity for clean water, and you see it, you are more likely to click the ad. We are seeing click through rate are higher by 5-10% increase in CTR.
And with that the fireside chat ends!

Andrea Navarro and Martin from UT lead a class in total body fitness at the Nike arena at SXSW. My son Shey experienced his first TBF class after shooting some hoops and making a few dunks.

In the class you'll see, among other moves, split squat jumps, push ups, bicycles, low squats, burpees and a big "dance out" at the end.

At the SXSW trade show I saw this unique powered skateboard that has regenerative braking and you can control it like a Segway by leaning forward or leaning back to make it go forward or brake. It came on the heels of a video interview I did with Dean Kamen, so the Segway analogy felt relevant. Watch for that and other interviews for SXSW soon. I'll be releasing them regularly on Google+, youtube, iTunes (subscribe to "springnet"), vimeo, metacafe, etc

For the first time since Sunday, Feb 5 I'm without severe abdominal pain and uretal stress! It feels so good to be healthy again. Yesterday, Dr. Singh who is my excellent urologist pulled the stent out of my abdominal area (talk about pain) and I had a few more hours of severe pain. Today I awoke feeling great and was able to exercise and engage in physical activity.

I feel so relieved!!!

Now, I can start thinking more about SXSW and be moving about and going to events again. I don't have to spend my entire day, for a change, between my bed, the toilet and the bathtub and shower. The kidney stone is gone, pulverized into little bits by Dr. Singhs laser.

Back in the high life again, as Steve Winwood put it.

+HIRL +sx panel +Unofficial SXSW Guide I'm trying to work as much as I can today to get the Spring Condos and the Spring Lodge and Spring Poolhouse ready for SXSW. It's been an uphill battle for the last 3 weeks with this whole kidney stone operation and the around the clock pain connected with it. Tomorrow is the final operation. Then my son Shey is flying in from California Sunday bringing his half brother Born to help. Shey's a big strong, 6-8 guy who works at Whole Foods Petaluma who can help with some heavy lifting that I can't do in the wake of my recovery. The help I had hoped from from G+ers showing up early to trade prep work for lodging for SXSW is likely not to materialize unless there's some last second miracle.

The BBC plus +Hermine Ngnomire +Laurie DesAutels +Joltrast . +Moritz Tolxdorff +Anna Scott plus a few others will be arriving on the 7th, 8th and 9th to stay out at the Spring Lodge. I'm still waiting for the guys who are moving out of the poolhouse +Jim Wyly and +Steve Creasy to get the place cleared out, cleaned and ready. I already had the pool cleaned and it's spotless, with a string of 70 plus degree days there will be some swimming and poolside bbqing possible during +SXSW They said this would be by the 5th which is tomorrow! That would be awesome because we have precious little time to get the pool house ready.

We have a few good beds, a whole lot of private bedrooms, at least 4 with bathrooms and 6 more rooms that could be private spaces. No one will have to double up unless they want to. I'm a little short on air mattresses, pillows and bedding but plan to pick some extras up and encourage folks to bring their own air mattress and bedding that can do that.

I won one of these the first year this started and they gave me a little plastic star. I kid +Cali Lewis about being fellow members of the "Order of the Plastic Star". Looks like it's a top ten instead of a top 25 this year. Glad to see my http://austingrandprix.com friends Kerri and Kein Olsen made it. Guess they'll announce the grand winner at a lunch in Austin today.

The social media landscape in Austin has changed a lot in the four years since the Statesman Social Media Awards were first offered.

WikiLeaks announced that it is going to release 5 million emails from the Austin-based private intelligence firm Stratfor. Here's the first 167:
http://wikileaks.org/gifiles/releasedate/2012-02-27.html

Here's a copy of the official WikiLeaks Press Release. It appears that the Anonymous contingent that compromised Stratfor's servers in December handed over their booty to WikiLeaks; there is no confirmation of that by WikiLeaks, whose leak submission infrastructure should preclude certainty on who provided the information. Looks like they're hosting a press conference tomorrow at Frontline Club (noon GMT in London):

Here's the place I've started: an internal email by CEO George Friedman from Labor Day this past year wherein he describes the creation of a new private hedge fund, "StratCap," guided by Shea Morenz (described as having "played with the big boys at Goldman Sachs") plus a request to train the USMC " and other government intelligence organizations to teach them how Stratfor does what it does, and train them in becoming government Stratfors."

OK time to tool up for +SXSW and play the annual guessing game about what will be this years twitter or gowalla, you know, the perennial killer app. This year there may be trend toward social discovery apps and NFC (near field communications, really done in hardware). So I'll trot out my picks, one at a time, for some apps you may want to try on for size. Please let me know in the comments how they work and if you think they're in content for being SXSWs killer app. What is your pick for this years big SXSW app?

Is anyone getting in to Austin around March 1st for SXSW who would be willing to help prep one of the places I'm offering for SXSW? Of couse you would get to stay for free for SXSW if you did this. I just had a kidney stone operation and I'm looking for someone who could step up and get the place ready by doing some housekeeping. I'm paying some guys to clean the pool and I had a new fridge delivered today. But I'm really not in condition to do a lot of hard physical activity or traveling back and forth to Cedar Creek right now. This is just for the 182 Clover Road location, the other places are prepped and ready. Some tenants who have been living there for a couple of years are moving out March 1st. Hopefully they'll live leave it in pretty decent shape!

Please let us know when you will be in Austin needing housing at the Spring Lodge in Cedar Creek and/or in Austin at one of the Spring Condos. Donation Suggested to cover your stay, email walhus@gmail.com with details on what you are willing to do in regard to a donation or if you have a skills trade of some sort. With the unfortunate departure of Dwiggie, a wonderful repository of fan fiction, we are now looking for new content producers who would like to help maintain this site. We had 10 terrific years with the Dwiggies but they decided to move on and now we need to breathe some fresh air in to Austen.com. We would of course welcome back the Dwiggies at any time but, that being unlikely, we're seeking an individual or group who loves Jane Austen who would like to volunteer to maintain and grow this site.

We are also the host of firth.com, a fan site for the award winning actor who has played the role of Darcy in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

Austen.com hosts a collection of resources about the great British writer Jane Austen (1775-1817). Her novels center on the lives of young women in middle class Regency England, and every novel ends with a happy marriage or two. But don't expect simple love stories in all of Jane Austen's works. As an unmarried woman of very modest financial means, Jane Austen understood the hopes and fears of women who had to rely on marriage and family connections to provide them with a home and means to live.

Miss Austen was fortunate in having the support of her family and a successful literary career, but she knew how easy it would be to become a tedious Miss Bates, a pitiable Jane Fairfax, or a sickly and forgotten Mrs Smith.

The enormous popularity of Jane Austen's novels has led to many movie and television adaptions of her novels, beginning with Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson in the 1940 version of Pride and Prejudice, continuing to the nearly legendary wet shirt of Colin Firth as Mr Darcy in the 1995 BBC mini-series, and now including Bollywood musicals and zombies. In recent years, there has been an explosion of popular novels based on Jane Austen and her works.
Austen.com hosts the texts of Jane Austen's novels and lists of other resources on Jane Austen, her works, and Regency England. We also host the popular and useful Basic HTML Tag Tutorial.

Austen.com contains general information about Jane Austen and the texts of her major novels.

Three years running, StartupBus is one of the hottest entrepreneurial events to come out of Silicon Valley. Intel has a "social media cockpit" at CES according to the article link below. +Aaron Strout, an Austin man about town and hotshot at WCG Services concocted this fighter jet cockpit for social media and it shows Intel is trying to pay attention and take the pulse of their customers and find out the buzz on their products and their competitors.

Do you use any kind of social media "cockpit" or "control panel" like hootsuite, spredfast, MainStreetHub, Radian6, etc? Does anything like this exist for analyzing and tracking buzz about your brand or persona on Google+?

The Social Cockpit by Intel tracks conversations about CES from Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, blogs and forums.

Spring.net, Austin, TX – Sherry Lowry, in this video, holds a session that tells you how to "Get YOU on your own calendar – regularly" and "Make time to fully develop your best ideas for YOURSELF". Jenny L. Magic is the speaker and her husband can't get an account on Google+ because of his last name and I'm guessing she won't be able to either! (her twitter is http://twitter.com/jennylmagic though).

Help cultivate & build YOUR OWN creative, water-cooler community. Progress on something special to you.

Take time: reflect, plan, define your concrete steps with support

Sherry Lowry sees something missing in Austin: a special time, place and "tribe" for those who want to be an active or frequent participant in such a supportive group. The format is designed to forward the process of developing our projects and implementing ideas. In all cases, participants will come away with a useful, concrete, topic-specific handout or very literal worksheet and concrete tips they can immediately incorporate.

Each of our Featured Talents will offer you literal, hand's-on application or integration into your own work of their concepts and ideas.

This is the scene in the locker room after the Austin Toros won last nights home opener. If there was an agreement among the team, it was to stay physical like they were in the second half.

How would like the awesomeness of having full media access at an Austin Toros home opener with about a dozen of your awesomest blogging buddies?
