The news of bin Laden's death broke first on Twitter. Mitt Romney officially announced his VP choice on a phone app. In fact, over 50% of people learn about breaking news over social media rather than official news sources, and 46% get their news online at least three times per week. 

It's a new media world now, a digital information age with a 24/7 news cycle, citizen journalists and an ultra-connected, smartphone-toting public. But has social media helped or hurt traditional journalism? If content is king, where should the public look to find timely, credible news?

In this August panel, local media pros discussed the impact of social media, both positive and negative, on traditional journalism, including news organizations, editorial talent and a sometimes skeptical public. Twitter and NBC formed a partnership for the Olympics, as the microblogging site hopes to use the Games as a way to build its following and prove itself as a money-making, sustainable business.  So did they succeed?

Facebooks 2011 ad revenue of $3 billion plus was ten times that of Twitters revenue.  The Olympics are twitters hail mary pass to catch up with the Facebook ad behemoth.

Austin, TX – Spring.net – SXSW Special – To quote Sara Toole: Another great session at SXSW was given by Jonah Sachs, author of the upcoming book Winning the Story Wars: Why Those Who Tell (and Live) the Best Stories Will Rule the Future. This was a fascinating presentation about one of the secrets to creating videos and stories that people will like and want to share.

Jonah says that the elements that make stories 'viral' are universal, and have been around for ages. He identifies three specific elements — freaks, cheats and familiars — as being common elements of stories that become mythic.

Freaks are characters that do not quite fit in. The elephant God 'Ganesh' is an example Jonah uses of a freak. People like to cheer for the freaks, the underdogs who overcome adversity to achieve something great. A freak could be an underdog with a big challenge.

I bought this Airstream in Lane City, Texas yesterday for $2,000 from Briana (the expecting lady in the picture).  Ken the plumber towed it to the Cedar Creek Lodge with his big muscle truck and we set it up in a nice spot in the woods.  I'm going to list if for rent on Craigslist today.  It's in great condition, everything works and it was a great price.  You have to travel far afield from food trailer hungry Austin to get a good deal on an Airstream these days.  And you have to make your move fast.

This is the first of a two part video I shot at SXSW on Makerbot's amazing 3D replicating technology.  Like +Annika O'Brien says, the system would reward me more by posting some cute and cuddly cat pictures that I copied an pasted from someone else, but I'm going to keep pushing original, thought provoking content even though it gets ignored.  Frustrating?  Yes.  But G+ users need to start rewarding original content that folks sweat over and grind out rather than a wham bam thank you m'am cat picture.

I had a dream the other night about having an event in Austin. It was at Cambridge Tower, a 15 story building at the edge of campus, the Capitol and downtown.

I dreamed we had a "oops" party with all the past winners of the Austin Statesman Social Media Awards. It started out at the AT&T Center with a SXSW style panel and presentation, then we had a BBQ party by the pool. The media rockstar soiree culminated in a rooftop star gazing party on the 16th floor of the Cambridge Tower.

Why is it called "oops" you say? Not for Rick Perry (although I did dream that he showed up as a guest) but for "order of the plastic star". Winners of the Statesman Social Media Awards all get little plastic star trophies every year.

I think there have been 75 past winners of the "oops" award and there will be 25 more this year. My fellow condo dweller +Kerry Olsen was the big prize winner last year as Texas top social media person.

Just got back from making a video at the Bob Bullock Texas History museum where Robert Rodriguez gave a talk and engaged a young hispanic woman film maker about his commitment to this films. Nothing stops this guy, he moves ahead on projects regardless of the barriers or lack of funds. Can't wait to push it out there. It was inspiring to me as a videographer.

1. Expensive, ok, we make it free.
2. Complicated, using software and hardware, we made ours browser.

Andrea Navarro and Martin from UT lead a class in total body fitness at the Nike arena at SXSW. My son Shey experienced his first TBF class after shooting some hoops and making a few dunks.

In the class you'll see, among other moves, split squat jumps, push ups, bicycles, low squats, burpees and a big "dance out" at the end.

I sat down at the sumptous "Watch with Ebay" booth at SXSW and got a tour of an IPad app that lets you buy stuff on ebay that you see on tv. So consume freely as you watch tv and see cool stuff that you must have right away.

I'm in the Fitness Instructor Training course at UT and Flor, who leads this Nike Training Club session, is one of my instructors. This was a really fun time, plus a great workout, at the Nike sports arena on Fourth Street, during SXSW. I got in quite a bit of basketball too.

I talked to +Jeff Pulver at the SXSW trade show yesterday and he shared some insights from his years of experience in tech and the telecom industries, and he offered a hint about his new venture called "purple". Jeff is and entrepreneur; he has helped in the creation of a number of startups. His core focus is on the Internet, apps and xervices space. He continues to be an Early-Stage Seed Investor. He is a story teller and Producer of the #140conf

At the SXSW trade show I saw this unique powered skateboard that has regenerative braking and you can control it like a Segway by leaning forward or leaning back to make it go forward or brake. It came on the heels of a video interview I did with Dean Kamen, so the Segway analogy felt relevant. Watch for that and other interviews for SXSW soon. Nike Training Club with Flor was awesome. I will push the video out of the entire session at the Nikefuel lot and be back at 5:30 pm Wednesday night for more of this awesome workout.

In addition to knocking it out of the park with mobile apps, and building brain powered skateboards, whurley and his chaotic moon crew can throw a mean SXSW party. For the first time since Sunday, Feb 5 I'm without severe abdominal pain and uretal stress! It feels so good to be healthy again. Yesterday, Dr. Singh who is my excellent urologist pulled the stent out of my abdominal area (talk about pain) and I had a few more hours of severe pain. Today I awoke feeling great and was able to exercise and engage in physical activity.

I feel so relieved!!!

Now, I can start thinking more about SXSW and be moving about and going to events again. I don't have to spend my entire day, for a change, between my bed, the toilet and the bathtub and shower. The kidney stone is gone, pulverized into little bits by Dr. Singhs laser.

+HIRL +sx panel +Unofficial SXSW Guide I'm trying to work as much as I can today to get the Spring Condos and the Spring Lodge and Spring Poolhouse ready for SXSW. It's been an uphill battle for the last 3 weeks with this whole kidney stone operation and the around the clock pain connected with it. Tomorrow is the final operation. Then my son Shey is flying in from California Sunday bringing his half brother Born to help. Shey's a big strong, 6-8 guy who works at Whole Foods Petaluma who can help with some heavy lifting that I can't do in the wake of my recovery. The help I had hoped from from G+ers showing up early to trade prep work for lodging for SXSW is likely not to materialize unless there's some last second miracle.

The BBC plus +Hermine Ngnomire +Laurie DesAutels +Joltrast . +Moritz Tolxdorff +Anna Scott plus a few others will be arriving on the 7th, 8th and 9th to stay out at the Spring Lodge. I'm still waiting for the guys who are moving out of the poolhouse +Jim Wyly and +Steve Creasy to get the place cleared out, cleaned and ready. I already had the pool cleaned and it's spotless, with a string of 70 plus degree days there will be some swimming and poolside bbqing possible during +SXSW They said this would be by the 5th which is tomorrow! That would be awesome because we have precious little time to get the pool house ready.

We have a few good beds, a whole lot of private bedrooms, at least 4 with bathrooms and 6 more rooms that could be private spaces. No one will have to double up unless they want to. I'm a little short on air mattresses, pillows and bedding but plan to pick some extras up and encourage folks to bring their own air mattress and bedding that can do that.

Is anyone getting in to Austin around March 1st for SXSW who would be willing to help prep one of the places I'm offering for SXSW? Of couse you would get to stay for free for SXSW if you did this. I just had a kidney stone operation and I'm looking for someone who could step up and get the place ready by doing some housekeeping. I'm paying some guys to clean the pool and I had a new fridge delivered today. But I'm really not in condition to do a lot of hard physical activity or traveling back and forth to Cedar Creek right now. This is just for the 182 Clover Road location, the other places are prepped and ready. Some tenants who have been living there for a couple of years are moving out March 1st. Hopefully they'll live leave it in pretty decent shape!

Wish me luck. I'm going in to surgery tomorrow at 11 am to get an 8 mm stone laser zapped that's in my kidney. It showed up in a CT scan 3 days ago so I'm not wasting any time dealing with it.

I put my ad in the wrong category on Craiglist. I put it in rooms to share and should have put it in "gigs". This is a great opportunity for someone with construction skills to get in to a free 3,000 square foot home with an in ground pool in Austin, Texas. I wish I had seen an ad like this 30 years ago when I first landed in Austin. I would have jumped on it.

This is the same house where the "overflow" from the Spring Lodge will be staying at SXSW. On March 1st the folks who have lived there for over a year will be moving out, the house will be empty, and I'm looking for a full time caretaker who wants to stay there. It's a great home with a large in ground pool, 3 bedrooms with private baths, three other bedrooms, and a workshop/garage. I'm also looking for one person who wants a place to stary for free during SXSW in exchange for some cleaning, food prep, etc for the folks who will coming to town for the Google+ #hirl #sxsw #sxswhirl hangout in real life. I need someone with skills like carpentry, plumbing, electrical, electronics, etc for the full time caretaker gig.

I just got out of Ranny (pronounced "rainy") T's awesome total body fitness class at RecSports UT and felt like a walk across campus, and I wandered across this delightful, fun event with kite flying, henna tattoos (I got one), lessons in 5 Indian dialects, a cricket match and tasty somasas. I'm not even sure who put this event on. The music was great too.

Intel has a "social media cockpit" at CES according to the article link below. +Aaron Strout, an Austin man about town and hotshot at WCG Services concocted this fighter jet cockpit for social media and it shows Intel is trying to pay attention and take the pulse of their customers and find out the buzz on their products and their competitors.

Do you use any kind of social media "cockpit" or "control panel" like hootsuite, spredfast, MainStreetHub, Radian6, etc? Does anything like this exist for analyzing and tracking buzz about your brand or persona on Google+?

Interesting new tv set top product at CES, under $100 yet it has more features than Roku, Apple TV, etc and serves as a wireless mouse. Will work with usb keyboard also.

I enjoyed hangout out (in hangouts of course) with +Jon Ray and the rest of the Google elections team in Iowa over the last few days. I heard about the dead heat in last nights election in the Google hangout about an hour before the main stream media started calling it. I hope these guys step it up in New Hampshire next week.

My dad, Don Walhus, was born March 10, 1916 in Caledonia, MN to the late Martin and Ruth Walhus and passed away December 23, 2011. He lived in Tyler Texas for most of his later years.

Dad graduated from St Olaf College where he sang on the choir and attended the University of Minnesota. He was a Special Agent in the Army during World War II in Alaska.

This service was at the Pollard United Methodist Church in Tyler, TX on Friday, December 30, 2011.

Dad is survived by me, my sister Alice-Ann Whiteneck of Alamo, CA, stepson Gary R Lewis of Houston, TX, grandson Shey Roth, and two step grandsons Jason and Michael Lewis. — in Tyler, TX.

Google+ Photowalk on the "Drag" (Guadalupe Street) in Austin, Texas with +Ed Lehmann but unfortunately +Jenna Lynn Monroe got rear ended in her car on the way to the photowalk. The Drag is the main commercial zone for the University of Texas campus and presents a great photo op.

My father, Don Walhus, passed away this morning at age 96.

Christmas Change Party! Folks brought petitions and contributions to the event focused on the Citizens District 10-1 Plan for voting districts for City Council in Austin, Texas on Saturday, December 17th at Scholz Garten, 1607 San Jacinto Street. About 100+ Google+ photography Circlers met right in the middle of the famous 37th Street Christmas Display on Saturday evening, December 10, 2011. All levels were welcome – beginners and beyond… they brought their kids, family, and this sort of thing… it was a very friendly event where socializing was on a par with techness.

I was intrigued by this video of s stretchable, wearable cable (usb or electrical) that can also be used to build more humanlike robots. These cables can be integrated right in to clothing as well.
