Yesterday I took off in my swim trunks, a t shirt and a pair of crocs and waded and swam along a long, cool spring fed creek at AustinSpring.com and found this amazing formation as I waded through the creek. The day was humid and hot. The water was cool and crystal clear. It was like I had entered paradise. I kept coming across these stunning formations. How lucky am I to live in a place like this?

Cedar Creek recent flood. The ants formed a floating cluster when their mound got flooded and the dogs played in the water. Floods always bring folks together and get them outside to marvel at a creek that becomes as big as the Colorado River.

Happy Birthday, you have some fine thoughts and an interesting path from materialistic, drinker/consumer to a more thoughtful vegan.  In many ways my path is the opposite from 20 years of being a relatively poor vegetarian living in a schoolbus to the present day, where I have a pretty decent real estate portfolio in booming Austin Texas, lots of computers and tech toys, drones, and renters who live around me who not only pay me regularly but give me great joy.  I am trying to build wealth without sacrificing my core values and without distancing myself from my clients and customers.  I don't know why but this strategy seems to be working.  Have a great day in PR!

And oh yeah, +Raul Colon don't give up on SXSW.  Let's plan to meet up next year at the #sxsw2017 and go to some parties, panels and events ok?

+Warren Baylor is a newby to Austin so I offered to buy him his first drink at the Craftsman Bar on Cesar Chavez in East Austin and then, after a little pranking incident at the bar, we went bar hopping. Warren went home too soon, he missed +Drink and Click™ Austin, Texas with some great people, and the teacher convention came by and treated us to some great cheese and crackers.

Lunchtime on the set of the tiny home reality tv show shoot. I thought I'd show you a wider view of the set. This is some day going to be the sports field at AustinSpring.com where we can play football, ultimate frisbee, soccer, and baseball. For more on this vision, see austerra.net and the Chautauqua video, that's our vision of future that goes 100 years in to the past and 10 years in to the future.

Watch this video if you want to know what we I on April Fools Day 2016,  I hope you can contain your excitement! I love the month of April because it means we can swim again and lots of cool things are going on.  Cool things like the drama of HGTV Tiny Home Hunters coming to do a documentary, like the neighbors catching and barbecuing bass, like all the wildflowers and lush vegetation growing so fast you can watch it, and the wildlife that comes to life.  April cruelest month?  Nope, not buying it.

What we did on April Fools Day, I hope you can contain your excitement!

The first time we saw the steampunk style tiny home was on an 18 wheeler that was stuck on the road to the AustinSpring.com kasita grohome tiny home village. A tree got tangled in the roof of the tiny home to the horror of the steampunk maven tiny home owner. So we called in a pro, David Streamer, who trims trees for Bluebonnet Electric and he took his chainsaw on a 20' pole and trimmed the tree with no harm to the tiny home.

After the harrowing turn in to our narrow gate the driver managed to navigate the tiny home to it's resting place, a beautiful meadow with wildflowers and a convenient nearby electric hookup. The driver had a long bed 18 wheeler which allowed him to tote along a full kennel of barking dogs which added to the surreal effect of this whole late night adventure.

The tiny steampunk home owner wasn't amused, however, at the shredded green plastic that had torn away from her roof deck floor and the deck itself was sticky to walk on. Ooops, not quite cured yet.

When reality tv comes calling you get to see how these shows are made and it's fascinating. The crew that HGTV sent out to us was focused like a laser beam on their project, a woman in search of a steampunk styled tiny home who lands in the Austin area.

If day one was an adventure getting the tiny home down our road, day 2 was a lesson in how the pros put together a reality tv show.

We have a rich assortment of locations for reality tv like our swimming pool, the pool house, the 5,000 sf AustinSpring Lodge with its 4 kitchens which contrasts sharply with a 240 sf steampunk home, our gorgeous hike and bike trail along Cedar Creek with it's wealth of wildlife (some of our residents decided to go fishing during the shoot and I marveled at one of the bass fish they were later prepping for the wood fired grill), our campfires, and barbecues.

But they chose the more spartan downstairs kitchen in favor of the upstairs kitchen with its higher cabinets and soaring vaulted ceiling and hand hewn cedar trim work. And they chose the folksy back stairs instead of the majestic creek because it told the story better. And they set up outdoors at the gateway to our hike and bike trail for the interview.

I learned a lot about how the pros do it and what goes on behind the scenes in reality tv. The day ended with the realization that we didn't have 220 volts for their tiny home to plug in to so we're off to Home Depot as soon as it opens up today to gather some parts.

Day three should even be more exciting as the production crew will focus on the tiny home itself.

The driver hired by HGTV went through heavy storms in North Texas to get the tiny home they're using for a documentary to its destination at AustinSpring.com 's tiny home village. Then we had to trim some trees to get it down our road. We can't wait to see it in the day light!

The tiny house on wheels for the HGTV documentary arrived at AustinSpring.com on 4/1/16. We had to call in a professional tree trimmer to cut several branches out of the way along Shiloh Road. Greta was kind of stressed (the tiny house owner) but she was relieved that we got the job done. Tomorrow the Producer from HGTV will be here for interviews and a video shoot for the program Tiny House Hunters.

We got an entire tiny home in to a 26' uhaul truck and unloaded it here at AustinSpring.com / austerra.net and it's ready for assembly. It takes a 4 man crew 2 days to put together this home complete with appliances and cabinets. It's 400' but can grow to any size easily with snap together panels.

The Austin area is the origin of man in the Americas!  This boggles the mind.  I mean, Austin is on a lot of top ten lists and all, but this is ridiculous.

I want to go on a field trip to see this dig site.  These first human settlers of America got the Austin area 15,500 years ago which is about 2,000 years earlier than has been commonly thought.

The article says "Fed by permanent springs, this area between the Edwards Plateau and lower coastal plains would have offered ample game from both ecosystems, and its limestone held an abundant supply of flint-like rock, or chert, ideal for making Stone Age tools."

And further the article states "Prior to about 13,500 years ago, sheets of ice two miles thick covered nearly all of Canada, making a land route impassable."

"The most plausible solution is that the first Americans traveled a coastal route, using boats to come down the Alaskan and Canadian coasts, parts of which probably would have been free of ice."

So the Austin area is the origin of man in the Americas.  I'll just sit back now and let that sink in.

Texas scientists have found the oldest confirmed site of human habitation in the Americas just north of Austin, where the Edwards Plateau meets the coastal plains.

In 2007 at SXSW, the New York Times called me the King of Twitter and so did Slate and Buzzfeed.  Now Texas Monthly has put out an exhaustive and fascinating analysis of how this event changed everything and made Austin the tech marvel of the world.  No going back now!

It was, fittingly, a start-up that helped make Austin what it is today: Twitter, which came to SXSW in 2007. It had officially launched a few months earlier, but at SXSW the company unleashed a full-scale marketing blitz, setting up flat-screen TVs all over the convention center and signing up attendees. Soon they were tweeting about things like where to go for dinner, and before long, everyone was checking their smartphones to see what everyone else was doing. It was the beginning of a new age, and both the city and SXSW would never be the same. – See more at: http://www.texasmonthly.com/the-culture/austin-and-the-city-of-the-eternal-boom/#sthash.B4FFDs3O.dpu

A hipster paradise, a high-tech nirvana, a festival wonderland. Today Austin barely resembles the sleepy college town I moved to in the seventies. How it changed is the story of a lifetime.

Yantouch”, Ken Ouyang indicates that “Yan” is Yin-Yan. “Yan touch” means Sun’s touch. Touch by Sunrise and Sunset’s beauty (We continue improve smart light and more versatile sync, even go multi-device next), touch by Sun’s power, brightness. (We continue to improve on white light brightness). It matches with our 3-in-1 main themes of Natural wake and Smart light. Yantouch is no cheap China factory name, it has deep root of China culture and philosophy.

Yantouch has introduced Jelly Fish LED light and black/white diamond shaped Bluetooth speaker, one is the combination of fine art and technology while the other one is a perfect integration of light and music. These two innovative products soon broadcast Yantouch’s visibility and lay a successful battle for small and medium enterprise crossing from OEM to brand management. Yantouch also developed tons of innovative control technology and smart phone software related patents, such as Music you can see, Stereo reflection speaker, Speaker-specific equalization and Remote control UI…etc. Even Ken Ouyan personally has up to 41 patented technologies which accelerated oversea marketing and broadcasted Yantouch reputation.

#sxsw #sxsw2016 SXSW Trade Show 2016, Austin, TX – xocial.com

See good. Do good. Feel good. And measure good.
You could say xocial is what happens when good karma meets the Internet. Instead of measuring our popularity, xocial measures our positive social impact—both the good we see others doing and the good we do ourselves. The goal is to make the world suck a little less. While having a lot of fun.

We’re able to measure good using a patented algorithm
we call the xo score™

The xo score is a number from 100 to 500. It’s built by earning xocial points—but just because you earn one xocial point doesn’t mean your xo score goes up by one. The algorithm factors in the type of deed or action, its significance, and whether you’re the one doing good or recognizing good.

Your xo score includes everyday actions (think driving your friend’s kids home from the sleepover) and monumental efforts (like raising the most money for a national charity). You can have an xo score if you’re an individual, a non-profit, a company, an institution or a geographic region. Your city can have an xo score. Your cat can’t.

Your xo score is based on efforts in six areas.
Building character
Day-to-day actions that show your generosity, kindness, candor, honesty and more.

Eco efforts
Steps taken to reduce your ecological footprint, from meatless Mondays to joining a car share.

Charitable works
Your support of charities, non-profits and social institutions like hospitals and schools.

Lifestyle choices
Actions that show you live consciously, from what you buy to how you treat your body.

Workplace leadership
Above-and-beyond efforts on the job that are an inspiration to others.

Lifelong learning
Your actions in the classroom of life, from tutoring your peers to enrolling in a post-grad program.

Blue Goji and Onlife Health launch Goji Madness Tournament to help Americans of all ages get fit in a fun way!

#sxsw #sxsw2016 SXSW Trade Show 2016 –

AUSTIN, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Blue Goji®, a wellness technology company, is excited to announce its anchoring “incentive reward” – the Goji Madness Tournament – for GojiVerse, the company’s gamified wellness platform. Unlike typical fitness-oriented competitions, Goji Madness is about having fun and staying active for users of all fitness levels and age groups (18 and older). No purchase of Goji Play is necessary.

Although the prevalence of conditions attributed to a lack of physical activity is well known, people’s good intentions to address sedentary habits is witnessed by the widespread purchase of at-home cardio equipment, gym memberships, and step-counting wearables. In reality, many of these equipment and gym memberships remain largely underutilized. The same is true for activity-tracking devices and mobile apps. Typically only the most dedicated, active, or healthy people continue using their wearable fitness devices six months after purchase. Simply put, although people have good intentions, they often struggle to achieve their health and wellness goals.

“Helping people realize their good intentions of building and maintaining healthier habits is our core mission. We accomplish this through true gamification of cardio workouts, fitness/wellness activities, and other mindful exercises,” explained Coleman Fung, co-founder and chief executive officer of Blue Goji. “Whether it’s our portfolio of cardio games to suit any taste or our unique Goji Moments-based challenges that connect users with shared goals, we have generated unprecedented levels of sustained user engagement from our pilot programs. Now we are introducing our anchoring incentive reward – Goji Madness – to complete our gamified platform.”

Wellness providers such as Onlife Health embrace the value health challenges play in getting people moving no matter their fitness level. Onlife has seen great success in using challenges to motivate members and deliver fun user experiences that improve health at the same time. The company will open the tournament to its employees and client-members nationwide.

“Onlife Health is excited to participate in Goji Madness,” said Arthur Lane, vice president of marketing and product development of Onlife. “Blue Goji has made tremendous strides in creating a platform that makes physical activity fun and rewarding. This technology drives engagement levels and addresses pain points of health plans and employers who are looking for innovative ways to manage their healthcare spend and boost engagement.”

“At every opportunity, we stress the importance of exercise in helping prevent or manage chronic conditions,” added Abbey Griffin, Onlife director of product development. “Members tell us they’d like to participate in fun activities both at the workplace as well as at home. Building upon our evidence-based approach, we’re making the investment to leverage this technology that we know can change sedentary habits and lead to improved health outcomes.”

Tournament Overview

The Goji Madness Tournament offers familiar and fun mechanics to encourage and incentivize Blue Goji users to stay active and have fun. Tournament contestants will be organized into four Goji Madness communities – Active Central (available to all contestants), BMI Camp (for individuals with a body mass index of 28 or higher), Seniors Rock (for individuals age 60 or older) and Veterans Honor (for our military veterans) – in order to provide members of each community with more targeted activities and encouragement through the competition. The tournament champion will win a new car – to be voted on by all Goji Madness contestants! Other great prizes will be awarded to the winners of each elimination round, starting with the top 64 contestants. The top four contestants will earn a trip to New York City, where they will compete live during the semi-final and the final rounds of the tournament. (See www.bluegoji.com/gojimadness for tournament information and rules.)

Action cameras, such as the GoPro make it fun and easy to capture your sweetest moments. But until now, it’s been a big challenge to manage and share your footage. Most of us have hours of footage hidden away on SD cards or hard drives, never to see the light of day. Until now.

The Sugarlock Action Cam Dock frees your videos, by making it fun and easy to manage and share your footage. This makes the Sugarlock, the newest, must-have accessory for the action cam.

The Sugarlock is a small, set-top box that connects to your TV. After a day filming, you simply plug your SD card into the Sugarlock and instantly get a gallery of your videos ready to view on your TV. Using your smartphone as the remote control, you are able to navigate through your videos, find and cut that perfect segment, and share it instantly to social media via a single tap. All in minutes and without a PC.

The Sugarlock also automatically backs up your footage to the cloud for safekeeping. The Sugarlock was built with the purpose of transforming formerly, what was hours of frustration, into minutes of enjoyment.

The Sugarlock was created by the same engineers responsible for the Roku, the ReplayTV (the first digital video recorder) and the Rio (the first MP3 player).

“I love using my GoPro and DJI Phantom to capture my life adventures. But I was frustrated by how hard it was to manage and share my footage,” said Don Woodward, Co-Founder & CTO. “After hearing the same problems from many others, we decided to build the Sugarlock Action Cam Dock. We hope you enjoy the Sugarlock as much as we do.”

#sxsw #sxsw2016 SXSW Trade Show 2016, Austin, TX – DoubleMe.me provides a novel 3D capture system, HoloPortal, that converts 2D videos into dynamic 3D models in real-time for various 3D content markets (e.g. game, 3D animation, VR/AR, 3D printing)

It mainly captures moving subjects (e.g. humans or animals) then generates fully animated 3D models as well as still subjects such as furniture. The 3D models contain volumetric 3D mesh, movement, and real textures (e.g. skin, facial expressions, clothing), hence “We literally put you into virtual reality.”

#sxsw #sxsw2016 Safe Catch is a start-up food technology company based in Sausalito, CA. At Safe Catch they wanted to bring safe and nutritious tuna back to pregnant women, young children and elite athletes. They did this by inventing new proprietary technology to test every single fish for mercury, and we are the only brand that does. They gave me a can to try and it tasted like fine, high grade tuna.

An album of SXSW Gaming and Music. At the Gaming Expo I found out my huge stash of IBM keyboards are worth $200 each and marveling at the modern day version of this keyboard from Logitech with the LED colored keys. Some great videos of the Asian hip hop show on Sixth Street. The Music Trade Show and a few concerts I went to with my son Shey.

We just had Sam stay in our "SoulPad" which looks like what would happen if a tipi married a yurt and had a baby. It's pretty cool. She loved staying in it and took part in one of our outdoor bbqs and sing alongs at AustinSpring out in Cedar Creek. We also just got a "tiny home" shown in these pix which will be on Airbnb soon.

"First Thursday" is a monthly event in the SoCo section of Austin (South Congress Avenue).  SoCo is a trendy mix of antique stores, top flight restaurants, food trailers, music joints (Continental Cub) and boutique hotels spawned by my former employer, the San Jose Hotel.  Drink and Click sometimes meets at Guerro's, shown in these pictures and famous for its taco bar and great Tex Mex food.

You can workout with the Nike Training Club on your phone (both android and iphone), on the xbox, on youtube, and "live" like we did here. I like the live version the best.

The Earth Native Wilderness School 25-acre wooded campus sits between the towns of Cedar Creek and Bastrop, TX. It is just a short twenty minute drive from Austin and is the home of a ton of incredible native plants and wildlife. The land sits on the banks of Cedar Creek, which is one of the rare year round spring fed creeks in Central Texas. From the native pecan bottom area (which includes some huge old growth pecan trees) to the rolling hills covered in White Oak, Cedar Elm, and Mesquite, opportunities for exploration and adventure are never more than a step away.

Wildlife on the land is abundant and includes, white-tailed deer, turkeys, armadillos, bobcats, racoons, grey-foxes, coyotes, and eastern cottontails. Numerous bird species are also incredibly abundant and include, red-shouldered hawks, several resident barred owls, pileated woodpeckers, and numerous other species. We are also lucky to have a very diverse number of native edible and medical plants including, turk’s cap, chili pequin, prickly pear, pecan, mesquite, wood sorrel, sugarberry, dewberry, cucumber plant, toothache tree, wafer ash, pokeweed and more.

They have many cool teaching and camping locations on the land including 4 outdoor fire pits. Other facilities on campus include indoor bathrooms with attached showers, an open-air outdoor classroom, a school office, and a 16-foot Earth Bag roundhouse that is currently under construction.

Post film showing coments by Louis Black (of the Austin Chronicle and SXSW)

Under the guidance of Louis Black, Jonathan Demme Presents: Made in Texas is a series of six short films from Austin’s early indie scene. These restored films were presented together for the first time in Austin since Jonathan Demme introduced them at the Collective for Living Cinema in October 1981. Made in Texas premiered at SXSW Film 2015.

This collection of rarely seen indie films reveals the DNA of a regional film culture that started in Austin but has become worldwide. The films present a way of thinking about film and making movies that broke barriers, celebrated the improbable, and launched today’s independent film scene.

The streetwise, punk, DIY ethos percolating in the 1980s culminated in a synergistic explosion of music and film, the repercussions of which are still being felt. It was in this unique atmosphere that the language of independent, maverick filmmaking took shape. This fertile cinematic soil bred Richard Linklater, Robert Rodriguez, and a dozen other directors, as well as the Austin Film Society and SXSW Film.

Many others involved in the scene have become international successes, industry leaders who have founded festivals and institutes, and distinguished writers and scholars who teach in the country’s most prestigious film programs.

Gervais said that he had made jokes about Mel in the past, and was now in the awkward position of introducing him. “I blame NBC for this terrible situation,” he said, adding, “Mel blames… well, we know who Mel blames,” a reference to Gibson’s anti-Semitic behavior in 2006.

Monday, December 14, 2015 5:00pm 8:00pm – This was my second visit to the +Urban Co-Lab and it was just as much, or more, fun at the first time. It was their Ugly Sweater Holiday Party! I got to meet and mingle with their members, local businesses, and nonprofits in the area. Appetizers were provided by Emojiis Grilled Cheese. and there was an abundance of good wine, good craft beer, and deserts of all kinds. This is becoming my favorite coworking space in Austin.
